The „Institute for Queer Theory“ is a center of research, theorizing and international exchange in the field of gender and sexuality studies as well as queer theory. Committed to social transformation the institute aims at transforming a normative order, which relies on the sex/gender binary and on dominant heterosexuality. It is a site where academic debate meets up with political activism and artistic/cultural practices, and where different forms of knowledge production and articulation form productive coalitions. It has been founded by Antke Engel (Dr. phil.) in Hamburg in 2006 and is by now situated in Berlin.
